Dear CWBA Members,
The CWBA shares in the grief and sadness for the recent deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and Tony McDade, and for all of those touched by these tragic events caused by racially motivated acts, particularly our Black members.
As a community, we must come together to raise awareness and end the systemic racism facing the Black community and other communities of color. Although we do not have all of the answers, we know that true change will only happen when we act together.
As leaders, we have an opportunity and a responsibility to address injustice, much of which happens in the system in which we work. Now is the time for us to Lead Beyond, but many of you may be asking, “How?” Here are some ways that you can act now and make a difference:
If you haven't already, join our fellow Colorado diversity bar associations, such as the Sam Cary Bar Association, Colorado Hispanic Bar Association, South Asian Bar Association of Colorado, Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Colorado, or the Colorado LGBT Bar Association.
Help chart our path forward by joining the CWBA’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee.
Support the Black Law Students Associations at DU and CU Law Schools.
Advocate for reforms at your City Council and participate in the political process by campaigning, voting, and engaging your representatives.
Contribute financially to causes like the #SayHerName campaign.
Check out these resources: Black Lives Matter Black Visions Collective.
Support Black-owned businesses and Black-led nonprofit organizations.
Read the work of Black authors and journalists.
Finally, tell us how we can help you Lead Beyond these turbulent times, as we strive together to create positive and lasting change.
In solidarity,
Miranda Hawkins
CWBA President
